Areas of High Acoustic Quality: Soundscape Planning
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper develops ideas on moving “soundscapes” into the mainstream of activity of environmental noise. Such a move has value in introducing a new dimension aimed at catching political attention and the engagement of other professions in acoustic management of outdoor environments. “Quiet Areas” the EU Directive on Environmental Noise requires “preserving environmental noise quality where it is good”. The paper shows contrasts and similarities between conventional noise control approaches with those in the soundscape literature. Environmental noise control deals with sounds of discomfort; soundscapes sounds of preference. Noise control measures sound by integration; in soundscapes the information content of sound is critical. Noise control manages sound as a waste product; soundscapes manages sound as a scarce resource. Managing “quiet areas” is about managing the resource of high quality acoustic environments. “Quiet” is not always (even rarely) their characteristic instead we should adopt the terminology “areas of high acoustic quality”. There is enough evidence to discount standard noise criteria (say Leq or Lden) as criterion for such areas. Instead, a twodimensional criterion is needed: level of sound (high level sounds versus low level sounds) and distinction between sounds that are unwanted and sounds that are wanted in particular contexts.

Determining the desirability of the soundscapes of the Timchehs of Tabriz Bazaar based on objective and subjective assessments
In the present study, in order to explain the desirability of the soundscapes of the Timchehs of Tabriz Bazaar, Sound Pressure Level (SPL) and Reverberation Time (RT) have been measured as objective variables of acoustic behavior. Using descriptive questionnaire, subjective assessments were used to determine the quality of soundscape. The research seeks to answer the question of how the spatial...

Sound as a non-visual component of landscape, has a significant impact on individuals perception of space. Because unlike the landscape that seeing and looking is totally an optional action, soundscape regardless of people comes to be heard and understood. Lack of attention to quality of emitted sounds in the environment may leads to problems such as noise pollution, lack of concentration, nois...
متن کاملAn Approach to Soundscape Planning
This paper focuses on soundscape planning, or acoustic design, in the planning and management of open space in both urban and non-urban areas. It is based on notions, promoted over several decades, that the acoustic aspects of open space can, and should be, subject to design in the same way as are the visual dimensions. The current paradigm for the management of the outdoor acoustic environment...
متن کاملAcoustic, Visual and Spatial Indicators for the Description of the Soundscape of Waterfront Areas with and without Road Traffic Flow
High flows of road traffic noise in urban agglomerations can negatively affect the livability of squares and parks located at the neighborhood, district and city levels, therefore pushing anyone who wants to enjoy calmer, quieter areas to move to non-urban parks. Due to the distances between these areas, it is not possible to go as regularly as would be necessary to satisfy any needs. Even if c...
متن کاملSoundscape planning as a complement to environmental noise management
The role and application of the concepts of soundscape planning, vis-à-vis those of environmental noise management, need elaboration. In noise control, sound is a waste product managed to reduce the immision of sounds that cause human discomfort. The soundscape approach, by contrast, considers the acoustic environment as a resource, focussing on sounds people want, or prefer. Quiet is not a cor...
